Topic – The wedding at Cana in Galilee

Icebreaker
Ask each of the married couples in the group to share briefly about their wedding day. When did they get married, where, and what was the highlight of their day?

Scripture Reading
John 2:1-11

Introduction
Jesus was at a marriage feast and he provided wine in abundance. One day Jesus will host the marriage supper of the lamb and there will be provision in abundance.
Jesus endorsed marriage by attending the wedding. Marriage is still God's plan for healthy and righteous relationships.
Discussion points:

1. Turn to the right person when you need help.
In the Jewish culture of the day family honour was very important. To run out of wine could bring dishonour on the family name. Mary would have been aware of this and she turned to Jesus for help.
When we go through a crisis it is important that we turn to the Lord rather than run to various people for help. Mary sets the right example for us.
When in trouble who do you turn to ... or what do you turn to?
What are some of the dangerous things to turn to when facing a difficult situation?
Read the words of the first verse of the Hymn 'What a friend we have in Jesus' and discuss.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

2. Mary's FAITH in this story
Faith and miracles go together.
John 2:5 'Whatever he says to you, do it.'
This is so relevant for us today. To listen to the Lord as He speaks through His Word or Spirit, and then to do what he tells us to do.
Mary believed in Christ's miracle working power. She was convinced that Jesus could help.
Has the Lord given you and instruction lately ... Has he laid something on your heart?
What do you need to do to step out in faith?

3. Jesus is the miracle worker. He can still turn water in wine.
This was a miracle!
Let us never take miracles for granted. We need to be astonished at every miracle just like the master of the feast was astonished.
Jesus provided an abundance of high quality wine ... what should have taken many years to accomplish Jesus did in an instant.
Sometimes we look at the situations we are facing and we seek solutions in the natural. BUT GOD can bring about changes in a miraculous, accelerated manner e.g. Recovering from debt. Gaining a promotion.
Does anyone have a testimony of a miracle breakthrough that they have received from the Lord?

4. All we need to do is bring our water and let Jesus turn it into wine.
John 2:11 'This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and his disciples believed in Him.'
Out of this miracle there is faith. The disciples believed in Him.
We need to give the Lord what we have. We need to bring our loaves and fishes. We need to give him our water. We need to offer the Lord our gifts and talents and resources and trust Him to do a miracle.
Have an open discussion on this point.

Prayer ministry
Who is in need of a miracle? Gather around the person and pray with faith into their situation.

Close in prayer
