Theme – Intimidated or Empowered

Scripture Reading

John 20:14-23

Day 1: Resurrection Sunday
Day 40: Ascension day
Day 50: Pentecost

Pentecost is the anniversary of the coming of the Holy Spirit, where we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit onto the Church of Jesus Christ. It is the day that the Church was birthed and empowered. Jesus knew that we would need a special ability to fulfil His commission and make a difference in the world. And the Holy Spirit is the One who empowers us.

1. Jesus is still speaking peace into your situation today. Will you receive it?

Jesus loves us. He wants us to experience His peace.
The disciples were behind closed doors. They were intimidated. They were hiding for fear of the Jews.
It's not Gods plan for us to hide, to be fearful, or intimidated.
We need to receive the peace of Jesus Christ. It is the first step to freedom. Jesus can walk right through the closed doors of our lives, come into our lives, bring his peace and set us free.

Discussion 1: Are you hiding behind closed doors today because of fear? Which area of your life are you most in need of God's peace?

2. See yourself as someone who has purpose and is sent by God.

As believers in Jesus Christ we should not allow purposeless living.
John 20:21 Jesus said, 'As the Father has sent me, I also send you.'
John 17:18 (The Message) 'In the same way You gave Me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world.'
These scriptures have to do with purpose, destiny, and identity.
Many people struggle to know and understand their purpose. The enemy also wants to steal, confuse, or hinder our purpose. And every year that passes without the believer discovering their purpose is a tragedy greater than we comprehend.
God loves to reveal His purpose for our lives. But, while we are discovering our unique purpose, we need to give ourselves over to the bigger purpose of touching people's lives by fulfilling the Great commandment and the Great commission.

Discussion 2: Ask group members to raise their hands if they have a sense of their specific purpose. Allow time for those members to share their specific purpose with the group and also ask them to share how and when they discovered their specific purpose. After the first discussion read the Great commandment and the Great commission and allow group members to discuss the significance of living them out each day, and in so doing touching the lives of people around them.

3. Receiving the Holy Spirit ought to be a priority.

John 20:22 "And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit"
Luke 24:49 'I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.'

Were the disciples baptized in the Holy spirit when Jesus breathed on them or at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out?
- Jesus was doing a prophetic action of what the disciples would receive at Pentecost.
- The disciples were receiving a foretaste of the fullness of what was to come.
- The disciples were receiving the indwelling or deposit of the Holy Spirit, and later at Pentecost they received the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit.

But the key is that we need to Receive the Holy Spirit.

In Luke 3:16 John the Baptist said about Jesus, 'He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.'
The reason that receiving the Holy Spirit ought to be a priority is because the Holy Spirit empowers us. We need the Holy Spirit's power to fulfil our God ordained purpose.

Discussion 4: Ask each group member to share if they have been Baptised in Water and Baptised in the Holy Spirit? Let them share their experiences of these two significant times in a believers life.

(As a leader take note of the people that haven't been baptised in water and encourage them to get baptised on the 3rd of June or the 22nd of July. Water Baptism is so important).

Prayer ministry:

Anoint and lay hands on any member of your group that haven't been baptised in the Holy Spirit and pray for them to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Be bold and pray for them to speak in tongues and prophesy like the believers did in Acts 19:6.
