Opening Prayer:

Icebreaker and #NT260 Check in:

Read 1 Peter 4:7-11 and ask group members to share something that stood out for them from the text. Comment on how this text is a good summary of what a Life Group is all about. Encourage them to be active participants in the LG meetings but also to reach out to one another with care and support during the weeks.

Theme – God's Chosen People

Read 1 Peter 2:9-10

"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy."

This passage refers to who we are in Christ Jesus. This is important for when we understand our identity in Christ we will value ourselves accordingly.

Read the passage again from the Message Bible

"But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you – 10 from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted."

1. You are a chosen generation.

1 Peter 2:9 – "But you are a chosen generation..."

Romans 8:29-30 – "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified."

As believers we need to understand the concept of predestination. In essence predestination is that God through His grace and love made a way of salvation for everyone. Yet in His foreknowledge He knew in advance who would accept His Son Jesus and who would reject Jesus. Everyone who accepts Jesus He refers to as a chosen generation. So we are chosen by God because we have chosen His Son.

Discussion 1: Have a discussion about predestination and the joy of accepting Jesus and being a chosen generation.

2. You are a royal priesthood

1 Peter 2:9 – "You are ... a royal priesthood..."

Exodus 19:5-6 – "Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

Ephesians 4:11-12 – "And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry."

Jesus is the King of Kings. By our adoption into the family of God we are the King's kids. We have become royalty. And we have become a royal priesthood.

Do you see yourself as a priest? Many people still look to the Pastor or those in full time ministry for spiritual guidance. Yet we are living in the day of the priesthood of all believers. Each one of us can minister to others. We are all in the ministry. We can baptize people, cast out demons, pray over homes and businesses, lay hands on the sick.

Discussion 2: Do you see yourself as a royal priest? What can you start doing more of as you step more fully into your identity as a priest who ministers to others?

3. You are a holy nation.

1 Peter 2:9 – "You are ... a holy nation..."

1 Peter 1:15-16 – But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy".

Ephesians 5:8-11 (NLT) – "For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. 10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them."

We may face temptations but we are capable of living a holy life, we can overcome by the empowering of the Holy Spirit. Holiness should be our heart's desire.

Discussion 3: How does our holiness impact the effectiveness of our witness?

4. You are God's own special people

1 Peter 2:9 – "You are ... His own special people..."

2 Chronicles 7:14 – "If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray ..."

Discussion 4: Ask LG members to close their eyes and to allow the fullness of this statement to settle in their hearts. You are called by My name! Give them a minute or so to reflect in silence and then ask one or two people to share briefly on what it means to them to be called by His name.

5. Purpose: You are called to proclaim His praises.

1 Peter 2:9 – "You are ... His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light."

Isaiah 43:21 – "This people I have formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise!"

We have a purpose in life. To proclaim the praises of Jesus. The Message translation says "To be God's instruments to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you – 10 from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted."

We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. We are ambassadors ever ready to represent the Lord and to be salt and light.

Discussion 5: Have a discussion about how we as believers need to have a different spirit, able to respond with faith and hope, despite the giants that are in the land.

Prayer ministry:

Pray for those in need.
