Life Group Guidelines
One of the definitions the dictionary gives for unity is: being formed of parts that constitute a whole. Unity as a teaching is a topic we are very familiar with in the church however in light of the urgency expressed in the scripture we read last week Hebrews 3:13 "But exhort one another daily, while it is called today, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin" I thought it would be relevant to visit some scriptures again regard unity and its importance for us as born again believers!
Theme Scriptures (Allocate the scriptures to different group members to read and to explore the different Bible versions. I mostly use the NKJV for the preparation):
Ecclesiastes 4:12; 1 Corinthians 1:10; 2 Corinthians 13:11; Ephesians 4:3; Philippians 1:27; Colossians 2:2; 1 Peter 3:8
Discuss the following:
  1. In the books written by Paul in the NKJV the words “of one mind” are often repeated. What do you think he means by this? And in particular of “one mind” regarding what? Note: some commentaries refer to one mind as “unity of spirit, common consent or unity in both the family and the church”
  2. Ephesians 4:3 talks about “unity in the Spirit”. What is the correlation that can be drawn between our relationship with the Holy Spirit and keeping the unity between one another?
  3. Based on question 2 do you think it is better to focus on Gods will and His word and then unity between believers will come as a natural consequence? Why and can you possibly think of an example?
I read the following commentary regards 1 Corinthians 1:10(NIV) which sums it all up beautifully so I quote it as it was written: “To agree with one another,” allow for “no divisions” and “be perfectly united in mind and thought” does not require everyone to believe exactly the same. There is a difference between opposing viewpoints and being divisive. A group of people will not completely agree on every issue, but they can work together harmoniously if they can agree on what truly matters – JESUS CHRIST IS LORD OF ALL!!!
